How Gen Z actually uses video calling (and what they hate about Zoom)

10 July 20266 min readTrends

Downloads, time limits, corporate interfaces — Gen Z has spoken. Here's what the next generation actually wants from a video platform.

Gen Z didn't grow up with Zoom

Millennials remember the before-times: phone calls, MSN Messenger, Skype. Zoom felt like an upgrade. For Gen Z, Zoom was just another corporate tool imposed on them during the pandemic.

And they have opinions about it.

What Gen Z hates about existing video platforms

Downloads. Gen Z grew up with apps that work instantly. The idea of downloading software to make a video call feels archaic. "Just open it in the browser" is the expectation.

Time limits. Zoom's 40-minute limit on free calls is widely mocked. Gen Z doesn't understand why a video call should have a timer. It feels artificial and annoying.

Corporate interfaces. Zoom, Teams, and Meet all look like enterprise software. Menus, settings, permissions, waiting rooms. Gen Z wants something that feels like a consumer product.

Requiring accounts to join. Sending a Zoom link to a friend who doesn't have Zoom means they have to sign up. That friction kills spontaneity.

Data concerns. Gen Z is more privacy-aware than any previous generation. They know Meta sells their data. They're suspicious of US tech companies. They want to know where their data goes.

What Gen Z actually wants

Instant. Click a link, you're in. No setup, no download, no waiting.

No limits. Talk for as long as you want. No timers, no cut-offs.

Mobile-first. Looks great on a phone. Works great on a phone.

Private. No ads. No data selling. No Meta.

Free. Actually free. Not "free for 40 minutes."

Why Chavid resonates with younger users

Chavid was built with these expectations in mind. It works in any browser — no download. It has no time limits. It's mobile-first. It doesn't sell data. And the first 30 days are free.

The response from younger users has been clear: this is what video calling should have always been.

The platforms that win the next decade won't be the ones with the most enterprise features. They'll be the ones that feel effortless.
